The Senior Section is for girls and young women aged 14 to 25. It offers an exciting and flexible programme with a huge variety of challenges and opportunities for personal development – sure to impress universities and potential employers!
All girls and young women in the movement who are aged 14 to 25 are Senior Section members but it is such a flexible section that there are many options open to them:
Senior Section members can undertake a wide range of awards and qualifications. These include the Leadership Qualification, which helps them in running Guiding units for younger girls. They can work as individuals, supported by their District team, or as a group. They can choose to work on one particular activity eg Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Queen’s Guide Award etc. or with a wider focus.
There are many international opportunities open to Senior Section members. They range from attending guiding events abroad to volunteering on community projects in developing countries.
In the Senior Section, young women participate in a fun and flexible programme known as Look Wider. The Look Wider programme offers a range of activities and challenges and motivates members to try out new things — it could be learning a language, playing a musical instrument, running a marathon, camping in the wilds or volunteering overseas. It is flexible and participants can take their chosen activities as far as they wish, from taster level all the way to gaining a qualification that is recognised outside guiding.
To find out more about this programme and all the opportunities available to you visit Girlguiding UK’s Senior Section website.
Girlguiding, in every section, follows what are known as "The Five Essentials." For the Senior Section, and indeed all adults, these are worded as:
The last one is embodied in the Promise, which Senior Section members usually take time to consider before making or remaking it to their peers:
“I Promise that I will do my best: to love my God; to serve the Queen and my country; to help other people and to keep the Guide Law.”
The Senior Section member makes a further commitment to be of service to her community.
If you are aged under 16 and wish to apply for information for yourself, please make sure you have permission from your parent or guardian.
