When I took over as the County Commissioner for Girlguiding Cornwall I promised to do my best. As I now come to the end of my term in office ‘to do my best’ has certainly challenged and stretched me and hopefully made me into a stronger person, but always it has been for the benefit of the girls in the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section as they are so important. We help to give them the opportunity to flourish in girl led surroundings, in a safe environment, to have fun and enjoy adventurous activities, to encourage them to work together, to learn new skills and games and to make them better citizens of our Country.
I am the County Commissioner, but it is the unit Leaders and other volunteers who run the weekly unit meetings and help locally that I praise for their dedicated work. Without all the volunteers, Guiding would not be able to flourish. I am pleased to say that our membership has increased over the past two years, but due to the lack of Leaders we still have girls on our waiting lists. We would like to reduce this waiting list and therefore need more volunteers, even if they can’t give a weekly commitment we can find a job for all, enabling more girls to join the Girlguiding movement. (There is more information about how to get involved on this website).
My sincere thanks is extended to the County Executive Committee members, without their help and support I would not have been able to do my job. It has been a very memorable five years, especially with it being our Centenary last year and all the wonderful events and happenings that made the year so special. Mountain top moments - there were many, and we must continue to have and offer mountain top moments to the girls.
I am extremely pleased to announce that Christine Davey, our current County Secretary, has agreed to be our next County Commissioner and will be taking over from me in September. Chris has been in Guiding for many years, having held various appointments, so I feel I leave the County in excellent hands. Congratulations Chris — I know you will do a fantastic job.
