On 22 February 2011 Sue Askew and Jessica Hodges from Falmouth, Pam Goudge and Claire Parkyn from St Austell, Heather Walker from Truro, Mary Eddy from Penzance and Paula Payne from Newquay were invited to the House of Commons for a special Girlguiding South West England event to thank volunteers for their outstanding work during Girlguiding UK’s Centenary year. The event, for around 150 people, was hosted by Tessa Munt MP in the Terrace Marquee at the House of Commons.
The day was even more special as it fell on 22nd February which marks one of the most significant dates in our guiding calendar. World Thinking Day is an opportunity for the ten million Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries around the world to think about the diversity of the worldwide membership and show appreciation for each other’s lives.
Mary said: “We were very pleased to represent Girlguiding Cornwall at the House of Commons and it was a great way to say goodbye to such a special and exciting 12 months for everyone involved in guiding. We were all thrilled that we were able to see parts of the House of Commons that we normally only get to see on the television.”
Jessica said “ It’s going to be a Thinking Day celebration that will stick in my memory and will be hard to beat. I was really impressed with the buffet tea – even the cups and saucers had the House of Commons emblem on them!”
